The Villa Vie Odyssey has suspended its continuous round-the-world cruise in Cambodia, stranding about 200 resident passengers, after fuel costs surged due to the Iran war.
- Villa Vie Residences announced Tuesday it was suspending operations and arranging disembarkation and temporary housing for passengers ordered off the ship in Sihanoukville.
- The operator said monthly fuel costs per cabin in parts of Asia had risen from about $1,800 to $8,000.
- Villa Vie said it was pursuing restructuring and recapitalization over the next 60 days, stating that "no outcome is assured."
- Passenger Holly Hennessy said residents were asked to pay a fuel surcharge in May before the suspension was announced.
- The vessel carried 203 passengers, mostly Americans, when it was ordered to disembark in Sihanoukville, Cambodia.
- Villa Vie attributed the fuel surge to the US war on Iran, which has closed the Strait of Hormuz and pushed oil above $117 a barrel.
