South Africa has announced Durban as its preferred candidate to host the 2036 or 2040 Summer Olympics, the first Games in Africa.
- South Africa's Olympic committee announced Durban, its third-largest city, as the candidate for the 2036 or 2040 Summer Games.
- Acting president Lwandile Simelane said the bid will center on Durban but include events in other cities.
- The IOC will select the 2036 host in mid-2029, with 31 October as the deadline for formal interest declarations.
- South Africa is among seven countries bidding for the 2036 Games, with the others being India, Qatar, South Korea, Germany, Hungary and Turkey.
- The bid will also cover the Summer Paralympics in addition to the Olympic Games, the committee said.
- Durban's bid will centre on the 56,000-seat Moses Mabhida Stadium, built for the 2010 World Cup.
- Simelane announced the choice on Thursday, saying the final bid would likely be multi-city.
