South Korea's defence ministry announced plans to extend its anti-piracy unit's operations to waters approaching the Strait of Hormuz.
- On Thursday the defence ministry said the Cheonghae unit will expand its operating area to waters south of Oman, about 650 km from the strait.
- The government will seek parliamentary and cabinet approval for the expansion and for extending the unit's Middle East deployment to 31 December 2027.
- The expansion adds a P-8A patrol aircraft, an explosive ordnance disposal team, automated mine-removal systems, and 75 personnel, raising strength to 395.
- A ministry official said the mission is restricted to non-combat operations south of Oman, with the aircraft barred from monitoring Iranian territory, waters, or the strait's interior.
