A federal judge has blocked construction work on the 250-foot arch for 14 days, a day after the National Capital Planning Commission approved it 8-4.
- US district judge Tanya Chutkan issued the temporary restraining order early on Friday.
- The National Capital Planning Commission approved the 250-foot arch on Thursday in an 8-4 vote after a hearing of nearly nine hours.
- Chutkan consolidated lawsuits filed by the District of Columbia, Virginia, a group of Vietnam veterans and an architectural historian.
- DC council member Phil Mendelson said the project had not received congressional approval and that Congress had appropriated no money for it.
- The Vietnam war veterans suing over the arch argue it could obstruct the sight line between Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial.
