Denmark’s Supreme Court has begun hearing an appeal by seven families evicted from a Helsingør housing estate under the 2018 law targeting areas with mostly “non-Western” residents.
- The two-day hearing began on Friday; the families argue their leases were terminated in 2022 because of their or their parents’ origin.
- The EU Court of Justice ruled in December 2025 that a neutral criterion covering many national origins could still be linked to ethnicity.
- The government says the law aims at integration and has argued the “non-Western” classification is unrelated to ethnicity.
- No verdict date has been set; the law requires housing associations to cut public family housing to 40 percent by 2030.
