NATO chief Rutte says he messaged Trump after Republican midterm losses

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said he wrote to President Donald Trump after the November 3 midterm elections to tell him to keep going.

• Rutte said his message to Trump read "raise your head and we will keep moving forward," sent the day after the November 3 midterms.
• Rutte said he writes to leaders after elections as a matter of routine and also congratulates the winners.
• Rutte said the United States alone outweighs the other 31 NATO allies combined, adding "we cannot really do without them."
• Rutte said Washington plays a vital role in defending Europe and in supporting Ukraine in its war against Russia.
