The European Commission has issued preliminary findings that TikTok's algorithm violates the Digital Services Act by repeatedly serving users similar content.
- Henna Virkkunen, the commission's tech policy lead, said the algorithm serves users more of the same content each time they scroll or like a video.
- The commission said TikTok's safeguards were ineffective, citing that marking a video "not interested" still yields similar diet and body-image content.
- TikTok rejected the findings as "fundamentally inaccurate," saying it has a strong record of protecting users and gives them control over their feed.
- The commission opened the investigation in February 2024 and can fine TikTok up to 6 percent of its global turnover.
