The European Parliament voted 381–167 on Thursday for a non-binding resolution urging a unified strategy to counter the Muslim Brotherhood.
- The resolution calls for designating the Muslim Brotherhood and its proxies as terrorist organizations, cutting their funding and banning cooperation with them.
- The vote, approved in a Strasbourg plenary with 15 abstentions, was proposed by the centre-right European People's Party bloc.
- Left, Green and Socialist blocs withheld support, saying parts of the text carry "Islamophobic" features.
- EU interior commissioner Magnus Brunner said the terrorist threat in Europe has been tied in recent years to extremist movements including the Brotherhood.
- The European Conservatives and Reformists group welcomed the resolution as a step toward a stricter, more realistic European response to organizations seeking political influence.
- The resolution explicitly calls for excluding FEMYSO, the Forum of European Muslim Youth and Student Organisations, from EU institutions.
