A Delhi court has granted bail to Jagtar Singh Johal, a Scottish Sikh held in India since 2017 on alleged terror offences.
- Johal was seized in Punjab in November 2017, three weeks after his wedding, over an alleged role in financing the Khalistan Liberation Force.
- He was acquitted last year in a Punjab conspiracy case but still faces federal charges before a Delhi court.
- The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention recognised his imprisonment as arbitrary detention in 2022; Johal has claimed torture, which Indian authorities have denied.
- Reprieve's Dan Dolan said the bail order must now be implemented, noting Johal still faces the death penalty in eight cases.
