Turkish police have raided the Istanbul headquarters of opposition channel Halk TV, halting live broadcasts and appointing an administrator to run it.
- Halk TV said employees could not enter the building Wednesday morning and live broadcasts were cut off.
- Istanbul prosecutors said the raid followed an investigation into chairman Cafer Mahir Oğlu on bribery, tender-rigging and money-laundering charges.
- Authorities issued arrest warrants for 17 people, including Oğlu who is abroad, and announced 11 arrests.
- Turkey's Journalists' Union accused the authorities of violating the law to overcome problems, saying the move struck press freedom.
- Mahiroğlu, in London, denied the bribery and money-laundering charges and called the raid a 'black day' for Turkey.
- He blamed former CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu for the raid.
- CHP leader Özgür Özel condemned the move as an attack on press freedom.
