Former Congolese president Joseph Kabila has launched a new political-military coalition with the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels aimed at ousting the government.
- Kabila unveiled the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation on Monday at his Goma residence, a city held by M23 since January 2025.
- Coalition adviser Claude Ibalanky said the group aims to end "tyranny" by any means necessary, including force.
- M23 leader Sultani Makenga will serve as one of Kabila's deputies, alongside Corneille Nangaa, Bertrand Bisimwa, and Freddy Kaniki.
- A DRC military court sentenced Kabila to death in absentia last year on treason, war-crimes and crimes-against-humanity charges.
- Kabila's new Front for the Refoundation of the Nation supersedes his earlier Alliance Fleuve Congo movement.
