Coverage
Zhang Chidong, a Chinese national accused of building a fentanyl supply chain from China to Mexico and the United States, has been extradited and indicted in New York.
- Mexican authorities arrested Zhang on 31 October 2024, but he escaped via a hole in the wall, flew to Cuba and then Russia, where Russian border authorities discovered forged documents, leading to his return to Mexico and extradition to the US in 2025.
- US Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche described Zhang as one of "the most dangerous drug traffickers in the world" and accused him of running a global criminal network that trafficked cocaine, fentanyl, and methamphetamine.
- The Chinese embassy in Washington stated that China has listed all fentanyl-related substances under control since 2019 and that its cooperation with the US in drug control was "extensive and deep".
- Cartel members in Mexico said Zhang's arrest disrupted fentanyl precursor supply, but one member stated "this trade will not stop" and that others would replace him.
