The UN's annual Emissions Gap report said Wednesday that overshooting the Paris Agreement's 1.5C warming limit is now imminent and unavoidable, urging action to limit the overshoot.
- The UN Environment Programme's annual Emissions Gap report, released Wednesday, said exceeding the 1.5C warming limit is now "imminent and unavoidable."
- UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen said the window for holding warming to 1.5C has closed, and the task is to limit the overshoot and find a way back down.
- The report said the lowest overshoot path, peaking at 1.7–1.8C and returning to 1.5C by 2100, requires emissions cuts of 18% by 2030 relative to 2025 levels.
- The report found existing pledges would cut emissions just 5–8% by 2030, bringing peak warming of about 2.6C, while current policies point to roughly 2.8C.
- The report is intended to inform policymakers ahead of COP31 climate talks, scheduled for next month in Turkey.
