UK school food overhaul draws opposition from students and staff

The UK education secretary has proposed banning deep-fried food and limiting sugary items in school canteens, with students and staff at a London school voicing objections.

• Education secretary Bridget Phillipson announced plans to overhaul school food standards, including a total ban on deep-fried food and restricting "grab and go" options, as part of childhood obesity reduction efforts.
• Headmaster Sean Maher described the proposals as "nanny state-ish" and said schools must allow treats while keeping kitchens financially viable.
• Head chef Daniel Roche stated that offering only healthy food would "cripple" the canteen business.
• Students at Richard Challoner school said removing cheeseburgers and desserts would harm finances, with 11-year-old Trivin claiming the school would "go bankrupt."
