An explosion at a weapons cache in a Syrian army position in Deir Az Zor has killed 11 soldiers, Syria's Defence Ministry said.
- The blast struck a weapons cache at a Syrian Arab Army position in Ayyash, western Deir Az Zor, killing 11 soldiers, the Defence Ministry said; nine others were wounded, the provincial government said.
- The provincial government said the cause of the explosion had not been determined and that an investigation was under way.
- State broadcaster Al Ikhbiriya reported the soldiers died while transporting heavy ammunition at the site.
- The blast followed a September 9 explosion at a depot in Idlib that killed 14 soldiers — the second such incident at a Syrian military site in less than two weeks.
- The Defence Ministry buried the 11 soldiers on Saturday at the national hospital in Deir Az Zor, state news agency SANA said.
