Two Democratic lawmakers have asked federal watchdogs to investigate whether taxpayer-funded television ads promoting President Donald Trump violated federal law.
- Raskin and Whitesides wrote to the Government Accountability Office and the Office of Special Counsel on Wednesday requesting the investigation.
- The lawmakers said the ads may violate the Anti-Deficiency Act and the Hatch Act and asked the GAO to identify the funding source and total amount.
- Democrats said the White House transferred $20 million from Department of Homeland Security funds to air ads resembling Trump's 2024 campaign commercials.
- Trump said he would gladly pay the money if the ads were found improper, while a White House spokesperson called them "educational and unapologetically patriotic".
- The White House aired a new taxpayer-funded ad on Fox News celebrating Trump's war on Iran, featuring his combat declaration and Hegseth's warning.
