Chiltern Railways has entered public ownership under Great British Railways after 30 years as a private operator, becoming the 10th rail company in the state-run network.
- The operator, privatised in 1996, now runs under the government's Great British Railways programme, which plans to cover all passenger services by the end of 2027.
- The Department for Transport will add 25 daily services and 10,000 extra weekday seats from December to reduce overcrowding on the network.
- The first day of public ownership saw disruption as a late-notice West Coast Main Line closure left London–Birmingham services busier than expected.
- Great Western Railway is due to be the next operator transferred into public ownership, in December.
