Researchers at the University of California San Diego have tested humanoid robots in two surgical procedures on large animals.
- The robots, named Surgie and each 1.5 meters tall and 27 kg, performed a gallbladder removal with a human assistant and a second procedure with two robots collaborating.
- The researchers stated the project aims to expand medical access and address surgeon shortages by enabling remote control of robots in remote areas and rescue operations.
- The team said the procedures currently take longer due to recalibration and response lag, but stated these challenges can be overcome with technological advancement.
- The research team plans to develop a self-operating assistant robot and form human-robot teams to deliver healthcare in hospitals and areas lacking doctors.
