North Korea has announced a successful test of a new, unidentified weapon system directed by leader Kim Jong-un, following recent short-range ballistic missile launches.
- State media KCNA said North Korea's missile office conducted a successful test of a new weapon on Sunday under Kim Jong-un's supervision, without identifying the system.
- Kim said the test displayed "highly advanced" defense technology and would deal enemies an incurable headache, KCNA quoted him as saying.
- South Korea's Joint Chiefs said North Korea launched two short-range ballistic missiles from Wonsan on Sunday, one flying about 450 kilometers and the other beyond 600.
- South Korean agency Yonhap said North Korean media images suggested the weapon may be a hypersonic missile, citing figures that differed from Seoul's account.
