A 4,000-year-old skeleton long depicted as a male spiritual leader and metalworker has been identified as female through DNA analysis.
- Ancient DNA analysis by the Francis Crick Institute has determined that the Upton Lovell skeleton, discovered in Wiltshire in 1801, was female.
- The grave contained metalworking tools, a ceremonial cloak with pierced animal bones, and a greenstone battle axe from Cornwall.
- The skeleton showed arthritis in the right wrist, consistent with repetitive use of metalworking implements.
- The findings are presented in a new exhibition on ancient DNA at the Francis Crick Institute opening on 16 July.
