Separate shootings near Johannesburg and Cape Town over the weekend have killed at least 27 people, police said Sunday.
- Eight gunmen armed with AK-47 rifles opened fire on a bar in Wedela township, southwest of Johannesburg, killing 17 people and wounding 15.
- Police said 10 people were killed and 11 wounded in a shooting at a store in Lwandle, near Cape Town, at about 1am Sunday.
- Police said no arrests had been made in either shooting, having launched investigations into 17 murder and 15 attempted murder charges.
- The attacks follow a shooting by three gunmen at a house party near Durban that killed 11 people, including a pregnant woman.
- A provincial deputy commissioner suggested the Johannesburg attack resembled a settling of scores, though police said motives remain unclear.
- Police said one of the victims was wanted in connection with a previous shooting at the same tavern last month.
- President Cyril Ramaphosa described crime as one of the country's biggest threats after army units were deployed to Johannesburg hotspots in March.
