UK 16- and 17-year-olds to be encouraged to follow midnight social media curfew
(opens the publisher’s site)The UK government has announced a midnight-to-6am social media curfew for 16- and 17-year-olds, which users can override by changing account settings.
- Technology Secretary Liz Kendall said the curfew and disabling of auto-play and infinite scroll would help young people get sleep, focus on school, and spend time with family.
- Conservative shadow education secretary Laura Trott described the plans as a "dog's dinner", saying curfews that can be switched off "won't achieve anything".
- The government also plans to introduce regular breaks for under-18s using AI chatbots, encouraging healthier online habits.
- The measures are expected to take effect alongside a social media ban for under-16s next spring.
