Misleading video of US ship sinking in Strait of Hormuz spreads amid renewed US-Iran hostilities

A viral video falsely claiming to show an Iranian attack on a US ship circulated as the US launched airstrikes and reimposed a naval blockade on Iran.

• Al Jazeera's open-source investigation determined the video is misleading, showing an Iranian Revolutionary Guard boat fire in March 2026, not a US ship.
• US Central Command announced airstrikes on Iranian targets in the Strait of Hormuz to undermine Iranian capabilities against commercial ships.
• The US reimposed a naval blockade on all Iranian ports; Iran responded with attacks on targets in the region.
• At least nine ships and tankers have been targeted in the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman since the US-Iran memorandum on June 17.
