Singapore has announced a major ministerial salary boost lifting Prime Minister Lawrence Wong's benchmark pay to S$3.6m, keeping him the world's highest-paid leader.
- Singapore's government announced it will raise salaries of ministers and office holders, lifting Lawrence Wong's annual pay from S$2.2m to S$3.6m ($2.8m), a rise of over 60%.
- Wong said he will donate the entire S$1.4 million ($1.1m) increase to charity over the next five years.
- Wong said raising ministerial pay was necessary to attract capable talent, adding the government must not set the financial hurdle so high that it deters candidates.
- Wong acknowledged ministerial salaries attract scrutiny because they far exceed what most citizens earn, given Singapore's median monthly income of S$5,775.
