Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey has urged incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham to introduce proportional representation before the next general election, bypassing a referendum.
- Davey said his party was willing to work with Burnham, adding that if Burnham was "serious about changing the way we do politics" then "my door is open".
- Davey argued that if Labour waited until after the next election to change the voting system, it might be "too late".
- Davey said no referendum is necessary because Labour's manifesto already promised to reset politics.
- Burnham said last week he would seek to persuade his party to include a commitment to electoral reform in Labour's next manifesto.
