Egyptian artists back bill enforcing public performance rights for actors and authors

Over 20 Egyptian actors and authors have publicly endorsed a legislative proposal to activate the financial and moral rights of performers when their works are rebroadcast.

• Yehia El-Fakharany said the right outweighs material prizes and honors, and recalled that the son of late actor Ismail Yassin struggled to find work despite his father’s fame.
• Leila Elwi stated that artists’ moral and financial rights must be protected in line with international standards.
• Yasser Galal announced that the Senate approved his proposal on the public performance right and referred it to the government for implementation.
• Ahmed Amin said the 2002 copyright law already guarantees the right, noting that YouTube creators continuously earn revenue from views of their content.
