Australia has moved to require social-media platforms to offer users algorithm-free feed options, a shift Instagram's CEO says would hurt the app experience.
- Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced plans requiring platforms to prompt users to choose between algorithm-recommended feeds and reverse-chronological feeds of followed pages.
- Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri said an algorithm-free app would leave users "overwhelmed" with brand content, drowning out creators and friends and reducing time spent on the service.
- Mosseri said he does not believe Instagram is clinically addictive, arguing social media lacks the withdrawal symptoms of medically defined addictions.
- TikTok added a Friends-only tab and Instagram expanded topic-filtering controls as platforms rolled out new tools for limiting algorithmic content.
