The United Arab Emirates has officially nominated Minister of State Lana Zaki Nusseibeh to succeed António Guterres as UN Secretary-General when his term ends in December 2026.
- President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan submitted Nusseibeh's nomination in a letter to the General Assembly and Security Council presidencies.
- Nusseibeh served as the UAE's permanent representative to the United Nations from 2013 to 2024, presiding over the Security Council twice.
- The latest informal Security Council polling round, held October 16, has not yet produced a consensus candidate, diplomatic sources said.
- Nusseibeh told Reuters she is on leave from her UAE government role and focusing on the humanitarian crisis in Sudan.
