Formula 1 has approved rule changes cutting the maximum grand prix distance to 290km and expanding the sprint programme from six to 10 events for the 2027 season.
- The Formula 1 Commission, chaired by chief executive Stefano Domenicali and single-seater director Nikolas Tombazis, approved the changes in London.
- Maximum race distance falls from 305km to 290km, with a hard stop time replacing the three-hour limit for races interrupted by rain or incidents.
- The FIA said the changes were introduced "to ensure that the spectators have the best possible chance to enjoy a full race if disruptions occur."
- The sprint programme expands to 10 events including Monaco, ahead of a 2027 season of 24 grands prix with Portugal and Türkiye returning to the calendar.
