Survey reveals housing affordability as top concern among young Australians

A longitudinal study published by the Australian Institute of Family Studies has detailed the anxieties and political engagement of Australians aged 19-24.

• Almost three-quarters of 4,168 respondents reported being "quite a bit" or "very concerned" about affording to buy a home.
• Only 15% expressed trust in politicians and political parties, while 86% trusted hospitals and 75% trusted scientists.
• More than 80% of respondents had signed an online petition in the last five years, and 31% had attended a protest.
• Dr Ebony Biden, lead author, said the findings challenged the stereotype that young people are disengaged from civic life.
