Seven Ethiopian armed groups have announced an alliance aimed at overthrowing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government and setting up a transitional administration.
- The groups announced the Alliance for Survival on Sunday, pledging to remove the federal government and establish a transitional administration.
- The coalition unites the Fano militia, the Tigray People's Liberation Front, the Oromo Liberation Army, and four smaller groups from Ogaden, Afar, and Benishangul-Gumuz.
- The alliance accused Abiy's government of "dictatorial rule" and of presiding over "war, genocide, mass destruction, and utter poverty."
- Abiy told lawmakers in July he had no "iota of fear" over Ethiopia's sovereignty, citing the country's "defensive capabilities."
- Analysts doubted the coalition's ability to sustain a long conflict given the government's military superiority, particularly its drone warfare, though a unified military command could pose challenges.
