Prime Minister Mark Carney has opened a visit to Europe this week seeking a closer strategic alliance with the EU amid an escalating trade war with the United States.
- Carney said Canada will pursue a "unique security and economic alliance" with Europe, ruling out "associate EU membership" in favour of a "unique alliance."
- He announced a corporate tax "mega-deduction" allowing companies to immediately deduct 100 percent of new investment costs and said Canada will open four major airports to foreign investment.
- Canada earlier this year became the first non-European country to join the EU's €150bn defence loans scheme, while Carney's office announced nearly C$500bn in new domestic investment ahead of the summit.
- The US currently imports more than 70 percent of Canadian goods, worth over $300bn a year, as the two countries impose tit-for-tat tariffs after trade talks collapsed in August.
- Carney is scheduled to address the European Parliament after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen outlines EU priorities.
