A Nevada jury convicted Canadian tourist Mitchell Fairbarn of animal cruelty Monday for taking Peachy, a Chilean flamingo, from its Las Vegas hotel habitat.
- Jurors deliberated about five hours before convicting Fairbarn on felony and misdemeanor charges for carrying the squawking bird to his hotel room in March.
- Fairbarn remains under house arrest pending sentencing Dec. 1, facing up to four and a half years in prison.
- Defense attorney Josh Tomsheck said the act, fueled by alcohol, was a mistake and insisted his client never intended to harm the bird.
- Peachy's veterinarian, Tiffany Moore, said the flamingo has recovered physically but has grown more anxious around people.
