UK government proposes restrictions on vape packaging and flavours to reduce child appeal

The UK government has launched a 12‑week consultation on plans to restrict vape packaging, colours, and flavour descriptions in order to reduce their appeal to children.

• Health Secretary James Murray announced the consultation, saying the government intended to make vaping less attractive to children and young people.
• The proposals require plain packaging for vapes, limit device colours to white, black, or grey, and allow only simple flavour descriptions such as “apple” instead of names inspired by sweets or cocktails.
• Vapes would be moved out of sight in shops, similar to current restrictions on cigarettes and tobacco.
• The consultation also includes plans for plain packaging on all tobacco products and inserts in cigarette packs directing smokers to quit‑help services.
