Rep. Thomas Massie has proposed articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, citing constitutional violations over the US war with Iran.
- Massie introduced the resolution Tuesday and read its text on the House floor; House rules require a vote by Thursday, forcing Republicans to take a position before the 3 November midterms.
- Massie said Hegseth broke the law by conducting hostilities in Iran for more than 90 days without congressional authorization.
- The resolution alleges eight constitutional violations, including a US strike on a school in Minab, Iran that killed more than 168 people, and the "extrajudicial killings" of at least 221 people on boats in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific.
- It also accuses Hegseth of suppressing free speech by retaliating against Senator Mark Kelly, and of involvement in the operation that captured Venezuela's former president Nicolás Maduro.
- The Pentagon expressed support for Defense Secretary Hegseth following the impeachment proposal.
- President Trump has previously criticized Massie for his opposition to the war on Iran.
- The 34-page resolution also accuses Hegseth of launching unauthorized wars against Yemen and Venezuela.
- The resolution, reported by Axios, calls for Hegseth's prosecution and removal from federal office.
