Ann Widdecombe killing a targeted attack, police say, as security review demanded

Police have said the murder of former minister Ann Widdecombe was a targeted attack, and incoming prime minister Andy Burnham has called for a review of MPs' security.

• Counter-terrorism police confirmed the killing of Ann Widdecombe was a "targeted attack" and are investigating the motive, but have not declared it a terrorist incident.
• A 28-year-old man from Rotherham was arrested on suspicion of murder and later re-arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences; he is being held under a Terrorism Act warrant for up to seven days.
• Burnham said politics had "darkened" and called for a "serious review" of MP security after Widdecombe's death.
• Reform UK's Robert Jenrick accused the government of a "dereliction of duty" over Nigel Farage's security; the Home Office said the claim was "categorically untrue."
