Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called on AI companies and governments to slow the pace of model development and proposed a three-point plan for doing so.
- In an essay published Saturday titled "We Must Pace the Frontier," Amodei proposed three strategies: embedded third-party evaluators, coordination among democratic countries' AI firms, and global coordination.
- Anthropic will unilaterally grant external evaluators employee-level access to verify safety measures and report incidents, Amodei said, urging governments to require other frontier firms to match.
- Researcher Jacob Coxon announced his resignation from Anthropic, warning the companies are "gambling with our lives" and that AI could kill all humans by the end of the decade.
- US President Donald Trump rejected the fears on Thursday, saying he was concerned that "if we don't win AI, we're going to be put in a very bad position."
- Anthropic's chief scientist has estimated a more than 10% chance that AI will eliminate humanity within the next decade.
- Grindr CEO George Arison has called the warnings dangerous and halted use of Anthropic's technology.
- Critics have accused Anthropic of fearmongering to influence regulation and protect its market position amid reported plans for a $965bn IPO.
