Egypt's Minister of Supply Sherif Farouk confirmed tourist and fino bread prices remain unchanged under a 2026 ministerial directive and ordered intensified bakery inspections.
- Farouk said prices and weights set by Ministerial Directive No. 5 of 2026 remain in force, with no increase in tourist or fino bread prices.
- The directive caps a tourist bread loaf at 2 Egyptian pounds for 80 grams, 1.5 pounds for 60 grams, and 1 pound for 40 grams.
- Farouk said inspection campaigns recorded violations of the prescribed weights and prices, and legal measures were taken against offending bakeries.
- The ministry called on citizens to report violations through hotlines 16528 and 19588.
- Assistant Minister Ahmed Kamal said inspection campaigns recorded over 3,000 violations since the March directive, punishable by imprisonment or license revocation.
- The ministry required tourist and fino bakeries to display official prices and weights clearly on their storefronts.
- Deputy Minister Abdel Moneim said the ministry conducts secret test purchases and refers violators to the public prosecutor under 1945 and 1941 laws.
- The ministry is reviewing a Bakeries Division request to raise tourist bread prices over rising free-market flour costs.
- It is also studying a request to allocate up to 200,000 tons of wheat for free-market flour production.
- Monthly wheat consumption stands at 750,000 tons, with 560,000 tons used in the free market.
