The US and Denmark have reached a security agreement expanding the American military presence in Greenland while keeping the territory under Danish sovereignty.
- Trump announced the agreement on Friday; it is expected to be signed at the UN General Assembly and to enter into force after parliamentary procedures.
- Trump said the deal grants the US permanent control over Greenland's security and bars Russia and China from establishing bases or making sensitive investments without US approval.
- Danish PM Frederiksen and Greenlandic PM Nielsen issued a joint statement saying the deal strengthens Arctic security while recognising Greenlanders' right to self-determination, with no transfer of sovereignty.
- UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham welcomed the US commitment in a Sunday call with Frederiksen, ahead of his expected first meeting with Trump.
