Home Secretary to Outline Legal Steps to Deport Rochdale Grooming Gang Leader

Shabana Mahmood will set out a plan to deport Shabir Ahmed, who was released on licence despite being stripped of British citizenship.

• Mahmood will announce legal steps on Monday to overcome a 1971 law that bars deportation of Commonwealth citizens who arrived before 1973.
• Shadow home secretary Chris Philp suggested the UK could impose visa sanctions on Pakistan if it refuses to accept Ahmed.
• Victims minister Catherine Atkinson said the government has not ruled out emergency legislation to fast-track the deportation.
• Ahmed was convicted in 2012 for child sexual offences and released on licence earlier this month.
