Ethiopia's federal government has appointed a six-month transitional administration in Tigray to govern the region and prepare for free and fair elections.
- Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's office announced the transitional administration will rule Tigray for six months and work to create a stable political climate enabling free and fair elections.
- The office stated the war in Tigray ended with what it called the "fourth defeat" of the Tigray People's Liberation Front, and accused the front of not wanting peace.
- Dr. Shishay Amari was named mayor of Mekelle, days after federal forces took control of Tigray's main cities; the front withdrew from Mekelle on October 3 without a fight.
- The front, unrecognized by Addis Ababa, allied with armed groups in late September to "overthrow" the central government before retreating north.
