Shipping disruptions, fuel and fertilizer costs, and El Niño drought are pushing global food prices into a new inflation wave expected to persist through 2027.
- The UN FAO food price index averaged 136 points in September, its highest level since November 2022.
- World Bank data showed food inflation exceeded overall inflation in 22% of 150 countries in the quarter ending September, up from 14% previously.
- Rice prices in Indonesia hit record levels, Indian sugar reached an all-time high, and Egyptian unsubsidized bread rose about 25% since July.
- UN FAO chief economist Maximo Torero said food system pressures will intensify toward the end of 2026 and possibly throughout 2027.
