A fire at the Jatiwaringin landfill near Jakarta has been burning for eight days, spreading across 15 hectares and forcing hundreds of residents to flee.
- The fire broke out on 30 June at the Jatiwaringin landfill on the outskirts of Jakarta, spreading across more than 15 hectares.
- Health authorities have examined at least 234 residents for respiratory illnesses, with 72 diagnosed with acute respiratory tract infections.
- Djohan Darmawan, Director of Emergency Operations at BNPB, said the blaze required special handling because it smouldered inside the rubbish, not on the surface.
- The Ministry of Environment and Forestry announced it will evaluate 390 landfills across Indonesia in early August 2026, and had issued administrative sanctions for Jatiwaringin in 2025.
