India has summoned Pakistan's charge d'affaires in New Delhi to protest a collision between the two countries' navies in the Arabian Sea.
-
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs said Wednesday that a Pakistani naval ship collided with an Indian warship in international waters the previous day; Indian reports said the incident caused no major damage.
-
India accused Pakistan's navy of "unacceptable and unprofessional conduct" and called the incident a violation of the 1991 bilateral agreement requiring ships to keep three nautical miles apart.
-
India asked the envoy to convey the need for both militaries to respect the bilateral agreements and instructed its own charge d'affaires in Islamabad to lodge a similar protest with Pakistan's foreign ministry.
-
The collision is the first direct military contact between the nuclear-armed neighbours since their four-day conflict last year; Pakistan's government had not commented publicly.
-
Pakistan responded publicly, saying the collision occurred inside its exclusive economic zone and accusing the Indian vessel of aggressive manoeuvres.
