Voting opens in high-stakes Holborn and St Pancras byelection
(opens the publisher’s site)Polls opened across the north London constituency, where 15 candidates are competing for the seat vacated by former prime minister Keir Starmer.
- About 30 polling stations opened at 07:00 BST and will close at 22:00, when counting begins.
- The seat became vacant after Starmer announced in September he was standing down to focus on international affairs.
- Fifteen candidates are standing, including Labour's Sagal Abdi-Wali and Green leader Zack Polanski, who said the race was "looking close."
- Polanski said voters should elect a Green voice to push Labour on rent controls and taking Thames Water into public ownership.
- The vote is viewed as a test for Prime Minister Andy Burnham's Labour Party, whose popularity among left-wing voters plunged over the war in Gaza.
- Results are expected early Friday.
