Prime Minister Mark Carney has declared the Pacific Link crude pipeline a project of national interest, fast-tracking its federal approval process.
- Carney listed the 1 million barrel-per-day pipeline, announced in July, as a project of national interest, targeting regulatory completion by September 1, 2027.
- Ottawa says the project will create 140,000 jobs and generate more than 20 billion Canadian dollars in GDP annually.
- Carney said the pipeline supports Canada's goal of doubling non-US exports, as the US receives over 90 percent of Canadian crude.
- Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said she would vote to keep Alberta in Canada ahead of an October 19 vote on holding an independence referendum.
