A coalition of 22 states and the District of Columbia has sued the Trump administration over a policy letting immigration officers deny green cards over public benefits use.
- The 22 states and DC filed the suit Monday challenging the rule, which alters the "public charge" standard dating to the 1882 Immigration Act.
- New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is leading a separate coalition of cities, including Chicago, Seattle and San Francisco, in a similar lawsuit.
- New York Attorney General Letitia James said the rule "preys on" families' fear of deportation and that her office fought the same policy in Trump's first term and won.
- Mamdani said the policy could affect 4 million people in the health sector, including 1.8 million children.
- The suit argues the administration overstepped its authority by bypassing Congress with the expanded 'public charge' test.
