Researchers have recorded the first-ever live footage of a rare barreleye fish in its natural deep-ocean habitat.
- Scientists from the Schmidt Ocean Institute in California captured the first video of a Macropinna microstoma in the wild using the remotely operated vehicle "Subastian."
- The fish, filmed at approximately 710 meters depth in the Atlantic's Dol Drone region, has a transparent head allowing researchers to see its upward-facing eyes inside the skull.
- The expedition also discovered two previously unknown hydrothermal vent fields and encountered rare bigfin squid species.
- Dr. Paula Zapata Ramírez stated that each sample and image collected contributes toward understanding the planet's hidden ecosystems.
