Ash from the Anak Krakatoa volcano has forced closures of airports serving Jakarta and other Indonesian cities, stranding hundreds of thousands of travellers since the eruption began Friday.
-
Indonesia's transport ministry said seven airports, including two serving Jakarta, remained closed Monday because of ash from Anak Krakatoa, which began erupting late Friday.
-
The closures delayed, diverted, or cancelled about 2,300 flights and affected more than 270,000 passengers since September 5, the ministry reported.
-
Transport Minister Dody Purwagandhi said the situation's end cannot be predicted due to changing weather, while the geology agency warned new eruptions remain likely.
-
Ash columns reached 6,000 meters toward Java and 15,000 meters toward Sumatra and parts of Banten, the meteorology agency said.
