An arbitrator has ordered Uber to pay $40m to the parents of a 23-year-old woman killed after a driver left her beside a California freeway.
- Arbitrator Richard A. Stone ordered Uber to pay $40m to Emily Normandin-Parker's parents after finding the company vicariously liable for the driver's negligence.
- Normandin-Parker, 23, was killed on 12 August 2023 after driver Vu Tran pulled over when she vomited in his car and she walked into oncoming traffic on the 73 freeway.
- Stone ruled Uber must be treated as a common carrier and rejected its argument that it is merely a platform connecting riders with independent contractor drivers.
- Uber said the arbitrator was wrong to hold the company legally responsible for the incident.
